About this Condition

Adenomyosis is a condition where endometrial tissue(the inner layer of the uterus) is present in the myometrium (the thick, muscular layer of the uterus).

The junctional zone (transition between endometrium and myometrium) thickens abnormally, however with menstruation, this tissue cannot normally be sloughed and it causes pain.

It is a condition similar to endometriosis (where endometrial tissue is present outside of the uterus).

In up to 20% of the time, both adenomyosis and endometriosis are found together, and it is associated with increased estrogen levels.

Typically adenomyosis resolves after menopause.
