About this Condition

Atelectasis is the partial or complete collapse of part or all of a lung.

Atelectasis occurs when the tiny air sacs within the lung become deflated or filled with fluid.

It occurs secondary to either something within the lung, or external to the lung compressing the structures.

Atelectasis causes decreased blood flowing through the segment of the affected lung.
